The wet’n’wild action for white water rafting on Padas River is one of the most thrilling day trips for Expedition Borneo in Sabah!

Sabah Travel Centre expert Lulu supervises our 20-strong adventure group to the swirling rapids of the mighty river nearby Beaufort town, which is a 2-hour drive and 30-minute train ride from Kota Kinabalu city centre.

All of our clients agree it’s a long way to go, as do they agree that they would repeat the adventure many times over because the experience of rafting the incredible rapids is truly amazing! On the International Scale of River Difficulty, Padas River is classed at Grade III & IV, which requires quick, fast and expert maneuveres – needless to say, it’s exhilarating!

It’s a breath of fresh air to experience a 1-day adventure, especially after their last activity: climbing Mount Kinabalu! In our 2D1N standard climbing Mount Kinabalu package, the thrill is different. Accomplishing the epic climb is one, as is the view of the Crocker Range being lit up by the sunrise from the Low’s Peak summit!

Wildlife spotting in Sabah is exceptional on the eastern coast of the state, and is an experience always best in the wild!

Downbelow’s Expedition Borneo program, for our adventurers’ who have just arrived in Kota Kinabalu not even a week ago, is a 30-day experience program in which time they will gain an appreciation for the natural beauty in Sabah, Borneo. Ecotourism is our chosen form of responsible travel and tours, and each of the adventure activities of our Expedition Borneo program, are conducted with this as a priority for our clients to appreciate their global footprint is reduced as much as possible!

Along the Kinabatangan River, participants have the opportunity to spot rare and endemic animals, such as orang utan, proboscis monkeys, macaques, crocodiles, and if they are incredibly lucky there are Bornean pygmy elephants (though a very slim chance, because of their low population!)

Boats used for the river cruises do not have a roof, so when Sabah Travel Centre Manager Alice delivers the presentation on their wildlife safari activity, they are encouraged to visit our KK Dive Shop (only next door!). They are advised to invest in a rashguard in particular, which they can use for ALL of their activities – from learning to scuba dive on the PADI Open Water Diver course to climbing Mount Kinabalu!

Recent adventure group of 20+ participants on our 30-day Expedition Borneo program were more than ready to start their climb from Timpohon Gate to Lows Peak!

It’s a great deal easier to put into perspective of how challenging climbing Mount Kinabalu is, when climbers are informed on what to expect.

Our Sabah Travel Centre offer clients as much advice as possible, so they successfully reach the summit of Sabah’s iconic landmark at 4,095 metres.

Climbing guests appreciate very much a video of the arduous climb created by our Sabah Travel Centre and Kota Kinabalu Dive Shop using a GoPro Hero camera. It illustrates the differences of environment from kilometere to kilometre; some of the way the trail are man-made stairs accompanied by railings, or large rocks and boulders, which are sturdy, or steep inclines (the last kilometre of the mountain) where ropes are needed to assist climbing (and are provided!)

Expedition Borneo groups are always successful in reaching the summit and back in Kota Kinabalu the following day for another adventure activity, such as learning to dive on the PADI Open Water Diver course, because we give more than enough preparation!

Supporting the efforts to protect our local marine biodiversity is why adventure travel groups choose TARP for their unique educational program!

General Operations Manager, Paul Jones, of our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre conducts a welcome briefing for our recent group of international school students who arrive all the way from Dubai.

Tunku Abdul Rahman marine park is the perfect location for receiving a unique perspective on marine conservation, as their island activity is based on familiarising themselves with nature. Not just the natural beauty of it, but also any environmental damage. Fortunately, we can see a positive difference from the effects of various conservation programs conducted by local environmental authorities and other parties! Our own dive operations for example, contribute in the form of our fun ‘Coral For Life’ program!

Participants on groups from schools and universities will return to Sabah once again to experience more of the ecotourism that preserves and protects, such as the conservation projects conducted in Kinabalu National Park – home of the famous Mount Kinabalu!

As part of our Expedition Borneo program, our group went ziplining through the Borneo jungle canopy on a day trip just outside of Kota Kinabalu!

The group thoroughly enjoyed their day, which was not only fun, but increases their fitness. Sometimes, health and fitness may not be given enough attention when travelling, which is understandable, although travels are less likely to be disrupted by unforeseen illnesses. It can really dampen the mood of any frequent globe-trotter, even if struck with an inconvenient flu or cold, and distract you from enjoying your adventure!

To avoid the adventure turning into a nightmare, we prepare packing lists, general precautions and FAQs for all our groups to maximise their enjoyment!

Before climbing Mount Kinabalu, participants are surprised to see such a short list of items to pack for a 2 day 1 night program, but they’ll know why as soon as they’ve climbed about 1km! Lighter is better, as with the physiological effects of altitude causes 1kg to seem as if it weighs about 20kg!
