And there are still plenty of adventure activities to explore around Sabah for our travelling groups, such as white water rafting on Padas River! Many of our group clients are from schools and universities, because the reputation of safety at our Downbelow operations is stellar, and that’s the most important aspect when organising activities for children and young adults.

For more information on specialised group programs, our Downbelow Travel Centre experts have years of experience to create an itinerary to provide a unique Borneo experience!

Large groups of adventurers’ from schools and universities, from all the world, visit our Gaya Island beach house for adventure travel to learn more about Sabah, Borneo.

Camps International UK is one of our largest groups (numbering in the hundreds!) and they are also very young (pre-teen ages), which means our operations have a lot of responsibility to supervise their adventure activities. One of their activities is the opportunity to qualify as PADI Open Water Divers, and they also experience other island fun, such as snorkelling, kayaking and jungle trekking too!

Camps International have returned to our paradise island beach house in Sabah to spend their summer holiday learning what interests them!

All young adventurers’ have differing interests, just as adults do, and our personalised program provides our island campers with a unique education on the natural biodiversity to be found in Borneo.

The first group, endearingly named ‘Pisang’ (‘banana’ in Malay), have arrived at our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre for a few nights of camping to explore the adventure activities available, such as kayaking, snorkelling and jungle trekking. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, for many of our adventurers’, is to gain the PADI Open Water Diver qualification under the supervision of our team of PADI Instructors too!

Their safety during their experience with our operations is of our highest priority, not only because they are our clients, but because they are also of a young age (15-17 years), so their judgment is not as developed as that of an adult. It is the duty of our PADI professionals to ensure their diver training and other island activities are conducted with the highest standard of safety regulations.

Professional scuba diving internship candidates are encouraged by our Go PRO team to assist as much as possible, in an effort to heighten their awareness of safety, and build their confidence as a leader!

Sabah’s marine biodiversity is important to the students of Cardiff University who are working towards their tropical ecology degree studies!

A group of 13 students on BSc and MSc Degrees in Zoology, Marine Biology and Ecology from the University of Cardiff, return to our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre for the second year running. They are also accompanied by 2 University staff, as the whole group will be learning to dive on the PADI Open Water Diver course under the supervision of our island staff team of PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors.

Once the 15 have satisfied our team of Instructors, a buoyancy clinic will be conducted for all participating in underwater visual surveys to fine tune their skills. They will be much more confident in their body positioning and breathing to map sections of the reef with as close proximity as possible, without damaging the corals.

Over time, their surveys offer an insight on the health of our local marine environment; for which, we as Project AWARE supporters, find it most valuable to understand what action is needed to protect and preserve our marine environment effectively in future.

Cardiff University are back with Downbelow Marine & Sabah, Borneo for a tropical ecology field trip, and this time with students of the following academic year!

To experience Borneo’s ecology is valuable for students and professors alike. The rich biodiversity found in South East Asia is paradise for both the budding marine biologist and the seasoned teacher; and Borneo lies within the ‘Coral Triangle’!

Many Schools and universities visit our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre to learn the practical skills required of them during their degree courses, which they will then put into practice once their education is complete and they are working in the field. The skills workshops are conducted by resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann and his team of PADI professionals using various specialised equipment for example quadrats, tape measures, fish sizing charts and more …

Changes within the reef over time are witnessed by our team who are always working within the same environment, this makes them Project AWARE & reef ambassadors, and their expertise assists the students to best understand data collected from their underwater surveys.

Go PRO internship candidates completing professional courses, such as the PADI Divemaster or the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) will also benefit when assisting our team of PADI Instructors to organise dive logistics for the students.
